Side-by-Side Remediation

Product feature, UX/UI

In the fast-paced world of DevOps, managing and fixing misconfigurations is a critical aspect of maintaining operational excellence. This case study explores the design and implementation of ARMO's Side-by-Side Remediation Feature. Tailored specifically for DevOps professionals, ARMO Platform enhances their ability to identify and address misconfigurations swiftly.

WHAT WE DID

Our team created a feature that goes beyond identifying misconfigurations to empower DevOps users with a tool that not only identifies issues but also facilitates efficient resolution within their existing workflows.

MY ROLE

As the lead product designer at ARMO, I spearheaded the design for this feature. My responsibilities included understanding user pain points and translating insights into a seamless user interface. I collaborated closely with the development team to ensure a successful implementation aligned with DevOps workflows.

THE CHALLENGE & GOAL

The challenge was to streamline the misconfiguration remediation process in complex DevOps environments. Our goal was to reduce the time it takes to address issues, minimize the impact of misconfigurations, and ultimately enhance the overall efficiency of the DevOps workflow.

RESEARCH
To develop a nuanced understanding of DevOps users' needs and challenges, our research included:
User Interviews

In-depth interviews with DevOps professionals of varying experience levels. Exploring daily workflows, pain points related to misconfigurations, and expectations from a remediation tool. These insights informed user-centric design decisions

 Incident Analysis

Analysis of historical incident reports and support tickets to identify the prevalent misconfiguration issues identified by ARMO Platform. This quantitative approach helped us pinpoint common scenarios, understand challenges, and prioritize features based on their impact on system performance.

Competitive Landscape

Examination of existing tools addressing misconfigurations in DevOps environments. This analysis helped identify industry trends, best practices, and potential differentiators for ARMO. Insights gained from competitors informed our strategy for creating a distinctive and valuable feature set.

Collaboration with DevOps Teams

Direct collaboration with select DevOps teams. This close engagement provided real-world context, ensuring that the Side-by-Side Remediation Feature would be easily adopted by DevOps teams, by easily integrating into their common workflows.

Industry Trends

Stayed current on industry trends and insights through DevOps-focused conferences. This external research complemented our user-centric approach by incorporating broader industry perspectives. Thus, ensuring the feature remained adaptable to future DevOps challenges.

THE DESIGN

We crafted an intuitive user interface within ARMO Platform that allows DevOps users to easily compare and remediate misconfigurations side by side. Implemented visual cues, highlighting, and a responsive design to facilitate quick and effective decision-making during remediation.

To enhance accessibility and improve user experience, I prioritized retaining familiarity with the current workflow while addressing issues of sensory overload and distractions. I elevated contrast, increased text leading, and used darker colors and background shading to highlight important elements, ensuring readability and maintaining contrast for users with visual impairments.

Navigation was streamlined to provide clear indication of the user's location at all times. I separated the side tree navigation from content, and made everything collapsible to facilitate ease of navigation, particularly for users accessing multiple resources.
